[a couple days or so has passed since everything returned to normal, and despite a few harsh words he had for the scientists, his mood has actually been pretty positive. how could he not be happy when everybody's lived? he's sat down with random groups of people--often pulling up a chair and jumping into the middle of an interesting conversation--and learnt all sorts of things about them and what their worlds are like. unsurprisingly, nothing lines up with his universe, so of course it only intrigues him more.

but after a while of this, he finds himself getting antsy and leaves his new acquaintances before he can grow attached too them. so like that, he's drifted around the ship, avoiding face-to-face contact with those he's grown to care for over the course of their journey together, but as the days dwindle away--and he recalls how he treated Olivia the first time around--he knows that if he's going to do anything, he better to it now, so he reaches for his Sphere and switches it on.]

Ahhh, can I get everybody's attention? Well, not the original passengers and that lot, you can return to your dining and well, whatever else you were doing.

But to everybody else, my fellow anachronistic travellers on this ship... I'm not sure what's going to happen once Orion and his two scientists finish their task or how it's going to happen, but we'll be back in our own universes and times again one way or another.

If we don't see each other again...[he trails off, looking away for a moment, muttering:] I might as well say it before it's too late, but--[his gaze returns back to the Sphere]--I wanted to say thank you. We've been through some difficult times, us: crashed into a planet, subjected to all sorts of things I'd never experienced in my long life, saw new friends come and go, and, well, nearly being killed several times. Certainly has that odd effect of bringing people together, and you lot made me proud, so very proud, and I'm glad to have met all of you, especially--well, you know who you are. I'm only sorry we couldn't have met under different circumstances and had ourselves a right proper holiday. At least we can now, huh?

So! [throws on a grin] Who's up for a bit of fun?

[if he had any doubts about punishing Ganymede in the past, they're gone now. absolutely gone. no words can effectively describe how downright furious and upset he is to have seen all those people perish in a blink of an eye.]

Ganymede...you had no right to use, to murder all those people! Ohhh, I knew you were mad, but to go this far?!

[but before he has a chance to fully continue, the words of Orion's own furious transmission reaches his ears and he watches in horror as the man disappears.]

No! Damn it, Orion, no! You can't kill him! I told you not to, you stupid, stupid boy!

[angrily, he runs a hand through his hair, completely oblivious to the fact that bits of snow are falling onto his shoulders and Christmas carols can be heard. finally, after a moment of stewing, he rounds on the Sphere and growls:] Riku, I thought I told you to keep a close eye on him. Why didn't you go with him? This is precisely why I told you watch him so he didn't go do something completely idiotic like this!

[it's been a few hours since Orion's last transmission to the passengers, and after some quiet reflection in his suite, the Doctor's mind is still processing all that he's learned. however, he's no fool; no doubt, he's only heard a fraction of what Orion knows. like father, like son.

thankfully, he knows a way he can bridge that knowledge gap, being the clever and brilliant man that he is. and so, he reaches for his Sphere--after doing a bit of actual cleaning in the TARDIS' and his suite, shopping for drinks of all kinds, and putting his clothes back on--and opens up a ship-wide transmission.]

You know, the universe isn't all that big when you think about it. We've been fortunate enough to be brought together from all sorts of places, times, even different dimensions! Blimey, we're quite motley crew when you think about it, and I certainly don't mean the band. But think about it! What an opportunity to share knowledge and compare how life is lived elsewhere other than in our own normal spheres of existence!

In celebration of that, I think it's time we had a party. [grins] Yes, definitely a party! It's been a while since we've had one of this calibre, and what a better time to celebrate than right now! This very minute! We could reminisce about times long past--or meeting up with mates we haven't seen in a while--over some great food and a pint or two. Or a drink of your choosing. Not everyone likes a pint of bitter. Me, well, I'll probably have tea.

So! If you're feeling up for a little relaxing, and some rather engaging conversations--and trust me, we'll have plenty, being the lively and well-rounded lot that we are--come up to my room on Level 20. It's the Metis Suite, name's on the door, first one right off the transportation pad. Can't miss it.

Oh...[remembers something and begins to rub the back of his neck sheepishly]...I just ask you bring your own food. I, uh, haven't kept the kitchen stocked with much as of late. I know, I know, not your normal party, but hey, bring a dish to pass around, and you'll be bound to have at least one thing you like! I do, however, have plenty of drinks, so don't bother with that unless you really want something specific.

Even if you don't want to stay for long, stop by and say hello. I promise you that it'll be well worth your while. [he smiles brightly, almost flirtatiously, but it doesn't quite reach that piercing look in his eyes.]

[ooc: In case characters have any questions for him about this 'party' of his, he'll be fielding questions.]

[when the Sphere clicks on, it shows very little, actually, with the exception of the steel supports holding up the floor above. the Doctor certainly isn't visible from the Sphere's perspective. actually, the device is quite lost and only once he speaks is it able to hone in on his echoing voice, showing nothing more than a pale figure. the light in the maintenance bay is as dim and bad as he remembers, but thankfully, he can see pretty damn well in the dark.]

Hmmm, so this is as far as I can go, huh? [smirks to himself and heads back towards the stairwell leading back up to level 11.] Heh, good to know. At least there isn't another hole like the last time. [stops randomly, stooping over to pick up a piece of metal, the bolts still attached to the ends. he frowns, wondering what happened to the machine it once was a part of. or rather where that machine or ship is now. he shrugs and continues on his way, speaking again after a few minutes.]

Anyone else have a fortuitous conversation with Orion? Mine was...[opens the door to the stairwell, light spilling out and finally showing him to be completely naked--save for a rather snazzy pair of boxer-briefs with stars printed all over the dark blue fabric.]...rather illuminating. [still smirks, unaware of his state of undress. though, that smirk fades to a more serious expression as he begins to ascend the stairs.]

Still, he didn't blink an eye when I mentioned that the fact that I knew Ganymede was his father, or that yet again, not a single one of us is on the passenger manifest. [tightens his fists and smashes one down onto the railing as the door closes behind him, a loud clang resounding throughout the whole of the stairwell.] Obviously we wouldn't be on the passenger manifest, the idiot! And I just know he'll dick us around again like he did before! When it comes to saving a life, one shouldn't hesitate! Each life is precious and the more time wastes sitting comfortably in that damned ship of his, the more of a chance there'll be that everyone will just get hurt again! But no...he can't come himself...Ganymede'll just die again.

If I have to, I'll...[falls silent.]

[Well, this is a little different than he expects. There's the Doctor waking up in a very normal cubicle, in a very normal office building, and next to a stack of very boring and normal papers--order forms, VATs, etcetera--what's that? Oh yes, those are bills. Plain, old, ordinary bills. He's even wearing a grey suit that's cut a little looser than his normal ones.

He picks some of them up, flipping through and seeing names of companies he doesn't recognise, but they're all for ordinary utilities and the like--things he doesn't have to pay for in the TARDIS. Swivelling in his black office chair now, he looks around his very plain, grey cubicle. There's nothing on the walls, not even a photograph or calendar, only a placard with the name "John Smith" pressed into the plastic in white lettering.]

How disappointing. I thought I was far more creative than that! Not even a single--

[Suddenly, the phone rings, interrupting that train of thought. Eyeing it, he picks it up cautiously and presses the receiver to his ear, but before he can even open his mouth, the person on the other line begins to speak, making his eyes widen in shock.]

'Will you walk in to my parlour,' said the Spider to the Fly... )

[ooc: Um, I'm so, so sorry for the tl;dr. I don't blame you if you don't read it all... Just skip to the end for the fun bits? >.>;]

[when the Sphere turns on, it shows him sitting in an office somewhere on Level 12, hands covering his face and muffling his mutterings. his knuckles are bloody and the two fingers on his left hand still move with an odd detachment like they're simply along for the ride and not being controlled by him. he's not showing it, but those nerve endings in his burnt hand have started to come back--something he hoped wouldn't come around until much later.]

[when he finally does remove his hands, he doesn't look all that different than he did a few days ago. no dark circles, yawning, or even hand tremors even with his recent assault on the wall behind him; his hands are as steady as ever. it's the dark, acerbic look in his eyes that tell a different story. he might not need the sleep, but that doesn't mean he isn't frustrated as hell.]

There has to be a way of helping them. I'm just not finding it. Medications, hypnosis, meditation, not even--! None of it! And if they don't get some sleep soon, they'll... [he trails off, not wishing to think of the people he knows and cares for dying from something so easily preventable.]

If only there were some way to get to that man! [he's aware of the Sphere being on now.] Say what you will, Orion. You talk of saving "them", well my friend, talk can only get you so far! And that's saying nothing about the riddles and endless games you and Ganymede force us to play! For all your talk about him and blaming the man for what's happened, you two are terribly alike. Perhaps his madness had grabbed hold of you before you evacuated the ship, I wonder.

[laughs bitterly] How foolish of me. It's not like you're going to respond to this or anything else we say to you, is there Orion? If I could only get to you...

[he's definitely reaping the consequences of his wrong guess, having burnt his hand so bad he can't feel the wound except anywhere in the edges around it. thankfully, the TARDIS has bound his hand with strips from her dress so he doesn't have to see or smell the ugly wound.

and he doesn't show it, but losing K-9 hurt. he knew he would eventually, such is the nature of his existence and the ship doesn't hesitate to reinforce this with every new turn. the dog's a permanent fixture now in the forest, guarding over the wooden bow he left behind. it just isn't the same.]

I don't know how many of you tried to guess that riddle, and I don't dare to wonder what could've happened if someone tried more than once, but if you haven't already, treat your wounds. [surely, he'd be in a lot more pain if he hadn't compartmentalised that pain. he can't afford to let that get in his way right now.] Not having the barcode any longer means we can't even ask that robotic doctor to treat us--and I'm sure there are some who are glad about that. [Oliver.] Find someone who can get the medical supplies for you, especially if there's any blistering or charring of the skin. I doubt anything that can sear the barcodes from our hands will leave behind a minor burn. If the wound is on more than just your hand, treat it immediately and keep yourselves hydrated. Or your condition could worsen and we can't afford to have anyone waylaid by this, not when we're facing that black hole again.

Those of you who didn't try the riddle, please, if you can help the others get supplies, get into their rooms, hell, anything that requires the use of the barcodes, please do. Be their...their barcode buddies! One good turn and all, you know?

Coordinate with each other, get yourself treated.

And then we can see about investigating level three. [and finding Orion.] That is, if level three's even accessible again at this point. [ever the realist, he doubts it is.]

Meet at the entrance to level 24. That should be the best place for everyone to meet. [but as for what he and the TARDIS plan to do, well...]

[his brow furrows in deep thought, glasses perched on his nose until he tears them off, rubbing at his eyes. a few disgruntled words pass his lips, but he's mumbling far too softly for anyone to catch what he's saying. probably for the best.

currently, he's examining the helmet Ganymede left behind in the comfort of his suite, tools and other electronic paraphernalia and gadgets he's cobbled together--or cannibalised depending on your standpoint--strewn all around him and the entire living area, though he left a pathway to the hall so he can make tea if he feels so inclined. but even days after his return from the fake Chicago, he's only roused himself out of his thoughts and tests once for tea and even that cup was long forgotten once he started his experiments anew.]

from the look on his face after his latest invention gives off a doleful little beeping noise, he's been at this for too long and needs a break.]

Nothing! Of course there's still nothing; a helmet can be just a helmet, stupid Doctor! Except when it's aj--no, that's for a different saying. Unless it's been capped off? Suppose that works...

[frowns and slumps back in his chair, holding the helmet. casually, he turns it end over end in his hands, lost in thought again and unaware of the Sphere's current "on" status--and if he were, he wouldn't mind the good Captain hearing him.]

It's not a key to the lift--little hard when there's no buttons on the panel. Or rather a panel secured to the interior in some manner, at least. [thinks about the one Motoko apparently ripped away.] Why leave this behind? Why bother to wear it this entire time only to take it off now? There can't have been a retinal scan device in there; there wasn't anything but regular walls and a panel-shaped hole with wires that did nothing no matter what I tried.

[he wonders, not for the first time, if this is what Ahab felt like trying to find his White Whale: continually frustrated beyond belief. but he's read that book--even has a personalised signed first edition!--and knows that if he becomes too obsessed, he'll lose sight of everything and everybody. and then something occurs to him, and he tilts his head as he eyes his reflection in the helmet's visor.]

Hmmm, it wouldn't be the first time something like this has started with nothing and later became something... It's only a matter of time as always, isn't it?

[softly, sadly] And Lara's gone home now. I didn't... [but he trails off, not finishing his sentence.]

[Filtered to all passengers]
[he's made it to level 23 by this point, judging from the chrome interior lining the halls. after hearing Kyon's transmission, he listens for a moment before he turns on his sphere, setting up a filter before he speaks. the captain need not be privy to this. if the number of volunteers Kyon's been talking to are any indication, a great deal of organisation is in order--especially seeing how large that engineering section is--and if he can protect them in any way, then he will. he refuses to let anyone else get hurt.

his tone is stern and business-like when he finally does begin.]

Now. I know I won't be able to dissuade some of you from coming. You lot can be quite stubborn when it comes to throwing yourselves in harm's way--but unfortunately, there's no time to waste! [and no time for him to bully people into staying in their rooms, even if it is for their own protection.] We're going to have to work together on this if we want to get home.

But if you do come, I hope you noticed the movement in the shadows in the room beyond where Ganymede disappeared into. [knows that door wasn't there before--hasn't the faintest idea how its existence has escaped his earlier inspections.] If I'm right, things could get very dangerous very fast if we don't proceed with an ounce of caution from this point on.

I'll wait here on Level 23 and once everyone who's going with me has arrived, we'll go from there. I figure with the amount of people there are on the ship and teaming up together in pairs or threes, we should be able to cover a great amount of that level in very little time. As long as there's a Sphere between one of you for emergency communication, we should be fine. However, I wouldn't recommend venturing in by yourself. The buddy system works for a reason. [wags a finger; the gesture saying that he will not be argued with on this point.]

[his face darkens, his voice low as he says this next bit:] And I'm asking you now, if any of you comes across the Captain during this, let me and the TARDIS know. I want a word with our dear Ganymede. [and you don't want to know what she has planned for the man.]

[casually he walks through the transformed level 15, evoking memories of his visits to medieval Romania and other villages just like the one he walks through now. he half expects to look up and see a castle silhouette in front of a full moon, clouds hiding the uppermost spires of the castle towers, but alas there is no such thing. instead, a heavy fog rolls in between the spaces of the dilapidated houses so thick he can't see below his waist after a moment. he makes a face at it, shrugs, and continues on.

soon, he's wandering out of the disquietingly empty 'village'. his hearts begin to race in anticipation; he's yet to see any vampires, and if he's going to, now's the time with him venturing out alone. he just wants to test how far the holograms go, what their limitations are. but they still don't appear.]

Oh come on, I know you're there! [tries to not sound annoyed.] Let's see what you're made--

[he cuts himself off, hearing soft laughter in his ear, the laughter so close it feels like it's coming from right behind him, but upon whirling around, he sees nothing but more fog. narrowing his eyes, he steps in the direction he heard the laughter come from.

a second later he hears it again, stronger this time. and again, the voice deeper, more malicious and menacing. a frown crosses his features and he continues to follow the laughter, through the outskirts of 'village' and into a deserted cemetery. his eyes dart around, thinking he's seeing shadows in the fog, and before he knows it, he's broken out into a run chasing after them.]

Stop this invisible nonsense! It's never cute or threatening, no matter what you or anyone else thinks!

[runs unconsciously around a couple grave markers--and through some small ones, but he doesn't know that thanks to the fog--all the while listening to the taunting jeers of the vampires' laughter around him.]

So are you going to come out, or what? Or do I have to--! [suddenly, his foot keeps on falling through the ground he'd been expecting to feel and he falls face first through holographic stone crosses and into the pool.]

[his face is ghostly pale, and a thin sweat has broken out across his forehead, dirt and grime sticking to his skin. he's clutching something off-screen, but from the grimace twisting his features and the mud covering his front, one can only venture a guess as to what transpired. his voice sounds strained when he finally speaks.]

It's been over twenty-four hours... As much as I completely appreciate the irony of losing the other one--made it even! Can't say that happens often!--I want it back. [mumbles to himself] Riku came back after that time, and I foolishly hoped...

No, the only answer is what lies beyond these holes. Jack's fingers and everyone else's bits and bobs, there's a reason why they're being severed--and yet Riku came back whole. Why is that? What's the nature of these holes? Not even my sonic screwdriver can analyse it, not that it's in top working order anyway.

[suddenly he stops and the sphere shows for a brief second a very muddy path with a heavy blood trail leading away from a black hole, as well as Converse-shaped footprints leading to and away from the scene, though the ones leading towards it are elongated, like he'd slipped...]

[he's aware of the sphere now and smiles at it, his feet bringing him to the edge of the hole.]
I didn't mean for any of you to see this, but there's something I need to check and I couldn't risk any of you trying to stop me and getting hurt in the process.

But! If this goes how I think it should, I'll be a complete man again. [holds up his left arm, the end of his brown coat sleeve folded over and darkened with dried blood.] In any case, the best way I'm going to find out what's in there is if I go in myself. And yes Jack, I realise I'm being a hypocrite here, yell at me all you want later.

So, hopefully see you all in a day! If not, well, we'll try not to think that way. [he hesitates for a brief second.] But if I really don't return... Thank you. Thank you all so much. You've been brilliant. [he grins sadly, winks, and suddenly jumps into the hole, disappearing completely.]

[however, there's a sudden hiss of static and a couple clicking noises as an audio recording, which he made in a moment of foresight in case he did pass out, begins to play:]

"Curious things, this weather, that ship, and Commander Orion and his crew, aren't they? I could say I'm surprised by the passenger manifest--but I'm not. Though, I am interested to see if that list is updated when we get any other new arrivals after this point. Something tells me that whomever or whatever's behind this is far from finished. Makes me wonder if...

Anyway, what concerns me right now is what he said about two months ago and an unforeseen emergency... Now, I don't know about some of you, but...my memories of this ship go back much farther than that. And I never heard of any such man named Commander Orion until he did his first broadcast two weeks ago. As far as the unforeseen emergency goes, well. I'll explain later."

[night has fallen once again on Eos, and one man who has spent far too much time listening to voices in the dark depths of the forest has finally emerged from the tree-line. amazingly, he looks slightly more put together than he has in past days. his tie is straight, tightened snugly in place, and his shirt tails are tucked neatly into his suit. every physical detail about his normal state of dress is meticulously in order.

but if one were to shine a light on his face, they'd see that those kind, ancient eyes of his no longer shine with the same lustre. they dart about, watching the spectres in his vision encourage and beckon him out towards his shelter he'd abandoned days ago. quietly he slips in, and stuffs certain supplies he feels he needs into his pockets.

finally, he reaches for the sphere, turning it on. he gives his tie one last little adjustment, a mad grin growing on his face, and then leans in towards the device and whispers:]
